The USVI is famous for its stunning, yet incredibly steep and winding roads. If you are traveling with family or a group of friends, we highly recommend renting an SUV or a Jeep from your Sixt car rental location. Having a vehicle with a bit more power and higher ground clearance makes navigating the mountainous terrain of St. Thomas or St. John much more comfortable and safe.

Can I take my rental car on the ferry between the different islands?
Island hopping is a dream, but taking your rental vehicle on the inter-island car ferries (such as the popular route between St. Thomas and St. John) depends heavily on current local branch policies. Generally, most rental agreements restrict vehicles from leaving the island where they were rented to ensure you have quick access to roadside assistance. Always check directly with the desk when picking up your keys to get the most up-to-date ferry guidelines!

Do I need an international driver’s permit to drive in the USVI?
If you hold a valid driver's license from the United States, you are good to go! For international travelers, as long as your home country's license is valid and printed in English, you typically won't need an International Driving Permit. Just remember to bring your physical license and a major credit card when you arrive at the counter.

How easy is it to find parking at the popular beaches?
Exploring world-class spots like Magens Bay or Trunk Bay is the highlight of any trip! Parking at major beaches is usually available but can fill up quickly, especially during peak vacation seasons. Whether this is your first or your sixth car rental experience, we suggest packing up your vehicle early in the morning to snag a great parking spot and enjoy the pristine sands before the midday crowds arrive.

Are there toll roads I need to worry about while cruising the islands?
Great news for your road trip budget—there are no toll roads in the US Virgin Islands! You can freely explore the lush tropical landscapes, historic downtown areas, and gorgeous coastal routes without worrying about keeping spare change for toll booths.

Can I add extra drivers to my rental agreement for our couples' trip?
Absolutely! Sharing the driving duties is a fantastic way to ensure everyone gets to enjoy the breathtaking Caribbean views. You can easily add an additional driver to your Sixt car rental agreement at the counter. Just ensure your travel partner is present with their valid driver's license when you pick up the vehicle.

Where is the best place to pick up my rental car upon arrival?
For maximum convenience, picking up your vehicle directly at the airport is the way to go. Whether you're flying in on a major carrier or using travel rewards from past airline partnerships like sixt virgin america, you'll find convenient pickup options right near the arrivals terminal, allowing you to start your island adventure the moment you land.
